Meaningful Use Is Expiring: What You Need to Know
In 2009, Congress passed the HITECH Act, which created Electronic Health Records (EHR) Incentive Programs for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Over the last several years, eligible dentists and dental organizations have been able to receive federal funding for adopting EHRs.
But, like all good things, this stimulus money must come to an end. The provisions of the HITECH Act are set to expire at the end of 2021.
Why Attest?
You may not have previously considered attesting for these subsidies through what’s now called Promoting Interoperability Programs (PIP). However, with the current challenging economic climate, Meaningful Use funds could be more valuable to your dental organization than ever before — and, even if you haven’t received funding recently, you may still qualify.
Affected Programs
If you applied in the first two years of the program, it may not be too late. You still have an opportunity to capture funding for one PIP program before it ends in 2021:
- Promoting Interoperability: Medicaid. For those looking to take advantage of these funds in 2020, October 1 is the last date to start. The full PIP program will end on September 30, 2021 (although CMS is extending the reporting period to December 31, 2021).
